This is a class for all levels.

Join contemporary artist Mathew Lynn exploring our beautiful local beaches and waterways, where you will be encouraged to express your personal visions, experiences and even memories, whether observational or more experimental and contemporary.

This is a workshop for any media you choose. You can work more traditionally, deepening your understanding of the fundamentals of seascape representation, or you may wish to completely transform your practice with experimentation, abstraction, even adding figurative elements.

You will be guided through a process of initial drawing sketches and colour studies to formulate your ideas and compositions. Mathew will then encourage you to move on to a main work as a way to ‘collect’ the progress you’ve made throughout the day, showing you how to transfer ideas and discoveries across media to make your main idea stronger.

Along the way you will discover processes and strategies that can help you better render an idea and improve your fluency, or unlock and bring clarity to what it is you’re trying to do in a deeper sense. Mathew will also discuss the work of great artists (of any period) that have specialised in seascapes, and what makes their work successful, moving and unique.

Please bring some images that you’d like to work from as A4 prints or on a tablet, make sure the images are also on your phone in case we need to print them. Mathew also encourages you to go to your favourite places to take photos and make sketches, or just bring along whatever material you’d like to explore. You can also bring drawings and paintings you’ve already done that you wish to expand on. Mathew can also assist you with choosing your subject.

Mathew will discuss composition, colour, light, learning how to ‘see’, identifying what is moving you and giving you strong feelings, representation to abstraction, and more! He will also discuss and help you explore the technical aspects of your medium.

You can work in any medium. Please bring the drawing materials mentioned at the start of the Mathew’s general materials list, and something to do colour studies with plus a water media pad.

There will be some group instruction, but mostly there will be one-on-one personal

guidance. Mathew’s teaching style is expansive, and you will be able to move through any ideas and approaches you like. He can also provide an extremely focussed personal environment for you if you wish to master something very specific, such as rhythm in water.

This will be a workshop for all levels, whether you are a beginner or more experienced. Mathew can give you the exact support, guidance and challenge you need, and his workshops are always a place for lively conversation and encouragement from fellow students!
