An exhibition by the students of Tim Allen
"Strength and fragility – the dichotomy that permeates life. They are the foundations upon which we interpret our world.
The works in this exhibition tease out the meaning of the push and pull of strength and fragility, of resilience and vulnerability.
Individual interpretations are expressed through various genres – landscape, the human form, objects and in styles from realism to abstraction.
The artists ask us to examine our traditional understanding of what constitutes strength and fragility against the background of a challenging and changing world."

27 February to 17 March

Imagining is at the heart of what artists and scientists do. They imagine what might exist, and what already exists that has yet to be discovered. The artist’s studio and the scientist’s laboratory are two of the rare places left for open-ended inquiry. In these spaces the big questions are addressed: “What is true? How can I improve my world by what I discover, what I create, and what I do?”

In this exhibition, scientific images of breathtaking beauty and technical refinement have been handed over to twelve artists who have imagined them into being in a completely new way in the form of sculptures, paintings, cyanotype prints, digital photographs, videos and tailor made optical devices. Several of these artists had careers in science before becoming established artists, demonstrating the crossover between the two disciplines. Researchers from the Australian National University and the University of Sydney, working in areas as diverse as cancer and malaria research and metallurgical engineering, have been involved. There are, in effect, two exhibitions in one!

Scientists: Roger Heady, Wen Hao Kan, Alex Maier, Antonia Posada, Leonie Quinn, Melanie Rug & Tim Senden.

Artists: Julie Brooke, Lucy East, Deirdre Feeney, Szilvia Gyorgy, Bridget Kennedy, James McCallum, Bill Moseley, Tamsin Salehian, Erica Seccombe, Janet Taverner, Jane Theau & Shona Wilson.

Art That Moves is our annual homage to performance art, and it has grown stronger year after year. With its outrageously talented artists, unique format and limited seating, it sells out quickly, so don’t wait too long to buy your tickets.

This year’s programme is overflowing with humour and wonder. Come and join Sabrina D'Angelo on a surreal and comedic journey, through a suitcase, into a parallel universe, and welcome the otherworldly Melbourne dancer Benjamin Hancock, awarded male dancer of 2017 at the Australian Dance Awards, to our studio stage. We are exceptionally fortunate to have the legendary shadow puppeteer, Richard Bradshaw OAM. Performance artist Ellis Hutch will take origami to a scale you have never imagined, and poet Tug Dumbly… well you just never imagined… Artist/cellist Lucy East will help us entertain ourselves with her moving installation. The consummate skills of these amazing performers will be corralled by the inimitable actress Amanda Muggleton, in the role of MC.

Finger food is included in the cover price. Art That Moves will have its own wine and beer bar under the marquee on the Centre’s lawn.

For the first time the Willoughby Arts Centre and the North Shore Poetry Project will be combining to bring our excellent local poets together for some pizza, wine and verse and a competitive edge. Yes, the audience can vote for their favourite poem with the winner taking home a $100 prize.

The night will be hosted by Gary McCartney, a Sydney based designer, poet and short story writer. Curated by artist and Willoughby Arts Centre director Jane Theau, this is the Ewart Gallery’s first exhibition of work created using mechanical and robotic means. In this exhibition the artist is once or twice removed from the art of creation. Including works by nine artists working in various media, the exhibition is a showcase of the ever-evolving and diverse nature of contemporary art.

Visitors will discover notable and provoking works, including Grant Stewart’s robotic machine, which will be perpetually drawing an abstract mural along one of the Gallery’s walls in response to visitors to the gallery, and Niloufar Rezaei’s Dispersion, which responds to breath, and is heading straight to Milan Design Week from the Ewart Gallery. BOOK LAUNCH at Moku: Out of the Shadows exhibition opening on Thursday 3 November at the Ewart Gallery, Workshop Arts Centre. Out of the Shadows: Fostering Creativity in Teacher Education Programs by Bronwen Wade-Leeuwen
Published by The Learner, a book imprint by Common Ground Publishing. Available online at thelearner.cgpublisher.com

Out of the Shadows: Fostering Creativity and Teacher Education Programs is a culmination of five years of research into the role teachers have played in nurturing the world’s greatest artistic minds. The study focuses on the evolution of creativity in teaching practices and finds that many methods are as relevant in today’s classrooms as they were ten thousand years ago. The ancient Chinese used a painting style known as Moku-Chi to nurture the creativity of their children.
They were encouraged to splash ink freely across rice paper, using broad, abandoned strokes to find inspiration.

This book fuses ancient and modern techniques to inspire teachers and their students.

We encourage teachers of today to learn from the lessons of the past. With a focus on Australian Aboriginal and Chinese arts and culture, comprehensive learning models and innovative teaching approaches aim to improve the art education in primary and secondary schools.
