Get your creative expression flowing and explore unconventional approaches to painting with watercolour in this fun one-day workshop. This workshop will introduce you to understanding the nature of watercolour pigments and pigment flow, exciting colour combinations for painting landscapes, and bold composition structures.
Suitable for beginners but you will need to work with tube-based watercolour paint (not from pans). See materials list for more details.
Materials List
Paint:
If you have a range of watercolour pigment in tubes please bring them along. If you don’t have any tube paint then the following is recommended as a minimum (I have tried to keep paint colours to Series 1 where I can, to avoid the more expensive colours!)
Tube paint:
- Yellow Ochre
- Light Red
- Burnt Sienna or Burnt Umber
- Payne’s Gray
- Cobalt Blue (this is a series 4 colour, you can substitute with Windsor Blue).
- French Ultramarine (a series 3 colour, can be substituted with Ultramarine Blue)
Paper:
At least 10 sheets of A5 300 gsm (at a minimum – lighter weight paper will be difficult to work on) cold pressed or rough textured watercolour paper. It can be less expensive to purchase larger sheets and cut to A5 for example 1 sheet of A3 will give you 4 sheets of A5 paper.
General Equipment:
- Masking tape
- Small Spray bottle for water
- 2H Graphite pencil
- A selection of round pointed brushes
- A selection of flat brushes (some firm for dry brush techniques, some soft for applying washes)
- Watercolour Palette (note: plastic palettes will need to be treated to avoid beading)
- Two containers for mixing washes (approx. 4 cm or larger wide, and 2-3 cm deep)
- A flat non-porous surface such as a plastic lid from a takeaway container.
- Water Container
- Masking Tape
- Plastic eraser
- Paper Towel/Rags
- Notebook
- Miscellaneous paper (test paper, protective sheets)
