Materials List [updated April 2024]

Windsor and Newton tubes (not pans) of:

  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Quinacridone Magenta
  • Quinacridone Gold OR Transparent Gold Deep
  • Raw Sienna
  • Burnt Sienna

Other brands are tempting however their colours can vary a bit. Daniel Smith makes very different Siennas and cerulean. Avoid. Also, don’t believe art shop staff when they tell you that a similar colour will do.

  • Brushes-sizes 12-18…round pointed brushes from Bunnings (craft department) are pretty good when they’re available. You can also buy them online from Atelier Art Supplies under the brand ‘Renoir’. They are all under $5 each.
  • Paper- A4 or A3 coldpressed (medium) surface pads. Eclersley’s sells Reeves paper around $30 and other  brands which are good. Don’t buy from a $2 shop or similar. What they call watercolour paper is not that at all.
  • Pencil and rubber
  • White plates in melamine or china for mixing
  • Palette for holding the paint
  • Cloth rag or old tea towel
  • Large water container that won’t topple over…old yoghurt or ice cream tub etc
