The Essentials of Clay with Takeaki Totsuka

This course is designed for those who are new to clay or those with an intermediate understanding of the medium. We will explore the foundations of wheel throwing with a focus on functional forms. Working together we will develop good principles for your throwing practice, while learning how to properly and safely work within a pottery studio.  A firing fee of $60 is included in the enrolment fee.

About Takeaki Totsuka

Born in Japan in 1977, Takeaki migrated to Sydney with his family in 1988.

Takeaki first learned to throw on an old treadle wheel in a pottery room at his high school. He went on to complete a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Sydney College of the Arts and in 2004 obtained his Masters of Studio Arts under the mentorship of Mitsuo Shoji. Since this time he has been creating pottery in his home studio in Castlecrag.  

During his many travels back to Japan, Takeaki has had the opportunity to spend time with some of the potters he admires, including Shiro Tsujimura and Takashi Nakazato. During extended visits he observed the techniques and approaches that contributed to creation of their unique wares.  

Over the years he has exhibited his work in a number of solo and group exhibitions in Sydney and Canberra, as well as his hometown in Japan. Takeaki’s pieces are predominantly functional tableware. While his work is largely based on traditional Japanese pottery, it also incorporates techniques inspired by a variety of master potters from around the world.
