All skill levels are welcome in this course which explores the use of various mediums in producing acrylic paintings. It will be a journey from the thinnest techniques giving watercolour effects using surface tension breaker medium all the way through to thick expressive palette knife applications using impasto and modelling mediums. Subjects and style are the choice of each artist – bring along 2D reference materials or still life objects. The materials list is available for download below.
Materials List
- A standard selection of acrylic paint colours: warm and cool versions of primary colours, yellow ochre, black and white, three different sorts of brown and any colours that are specific to your painting idea
- A variety of bristle brushes and a palette knife or two
- Palette
- Rag
- Containers for mediums and water (make sure there are some takeaway style containers included)
- Canvas or wood panel – size is up to you (not essential but it is good to have a spare as well)
Mediums
Acrylic mediums often get called different things by different brands and can be confusing so it is best to read the label and see what it does. What you will need is:
- A flow or spreader medium
- A retarder medium
- An impasto medium
- A medium that is suitable for glazing
- And any acrylic mediums you already have
- We will be using surface tension breaker medium but you need so little I can provide it
